As good as I've seen them....
A show with this much passion and kinesis is hard to sum up the night. Cover songs included three duets with Dan Layus of Augustana, such as The Rolling Stone's Sweet Virginia, Joe Cocker's Delta Lady, and Bob Dylan's Just Like a Woman. Duritz was pumped to play for his adopted hometown crowd, always on point and focused on delivering a great set. The encore featured a resplendent version of Pete Seeger's This Land is Your Land and Simon and Garfunkel's Cecilia, which unfortunately couldn't hold a candle to Cecilia.
The set was divided into two parts, with the first set featuring memorable songs like "Goodnight Elisabeth," where he improvised vocals in his usual Duritzian way. All his duets with Dan Layus were top-notch, with Sweet Virginia being the most memorable. In the second set, energetic performances of "Hanging Tree," "Miami," and "Have You Seen Me Lately" were as frothy as they have ever been. They closed with a by-the-book version of Mr. Jones, an ensemble version of "Why Do You Come When I Call," and an expected group singalong version of "Hangingaround."
This being said, I can't remember Adam smiling as much, as focused and on point as he was tonight. Truly sensational stuff and a firm believer in why attending live music is so worth it. The pretentious format of all the bands on the stage at the same time worked seamlessly and cohesively, and props to Duritz, his bandmates, and the two support acts. It was truly a special night, and my only hope is that a DVD of the show gets released. Hard to fade into the background a night like that.
